2023 Chevy Colorado Could Have Looked Wildly Different

Design / Comments

Comments on the design have been mixed, but an inside look at the design process shows us what could've been.

There's a new Chevy Colorado for 2023. It's more aggressive looking, the interior looks to be more upscale, and there's only turbo power going forward. But while the response to the Chevrolet Colorado has been mostly positive, it seems that some people believe it could've looked better.

To fuel the flames of that discussion further, General Motors' design department has given us an inside look at what the Colorado could've looked like. In a series of Instagram posts, the design team has showcased alternate design sketches of both the inside and outside of the midsize truck, and we can't help but feel maybe some of the discarded designs look a little better...

The sleek silver truck you see above is a sketch by Scott Wassell, who was also responsible for the Cadillac CTS in The Matrix Reloaded. Aside from the awkward proportions - design sketches are often caricatured representations of a vehicle to emphasize key design elements - the sketch shows off an abundance of sharp, aggressive details and more than just a hint of Silverado EV.

The other sketches show variations on a basic theme. Some use split headlights, others toy with the shape and prominence of the grille.

Sadly, many of these elements will forever remain on the cutting room floor, but Chevrolet hasn't left buyers out in the cold who want their truck to look a little different. Aside from the styling tweaks from one trim to the next, the Colorado will have more than 200 accessories to personalize it with.

As for interior sketches? It seems not many changes were made carrying over to production, telling us that GM got it right the first time. The Colorado's interior was a known weak point of the old model that had been usurped by more contemporary rivals. The new design looks to be a massive step forward for the brand, but the final proof will be in the pudding.

We know from past GM products that while the design can be excellent, it can fall short in quality. But we always hope that the next one is better than the last, and that seems to be the case for the updated Colorado.
