AMG CLA 45

After our spies recently caught a prototype of the upcoming next-generation Mercedes CLA stopping for fuel , it was probably only a matter of time before we would see its more potent AMG sibling being put through its paces. This is our first look at the new Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 based on the brand-new A-Class, and from these spy shots sent to us the German performance sedan looks more aggressive than the standard models like you would expect. Bear in mind, though, that it hasn't been confirmed if the A45 name will be reprised, as rumors suggest the A-Class-based model could adopt the A50 monikor instead.

At the front, we can see the AMG version will be able to breathe easier thanks to the larger air intakes in the bumper that Mercedes has attempted to cover up. The prototype also sports AMG's traditional Panamericana grille and is also riding a lot lower to the grille than the standard model, giving the car a sporty stance. AMG's signature quad exhaust pipes and an aggressive rear bumper indicate we're not looking at the standard version of the CLA, and there's also a trunk lid spoiler to further differentiate it.

Under the hood, the new Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 is expected to once again be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, this time tuned to deliver 400 hp. That would be a welcome increase over the outgoing model, which delivers 375 hp and 350 lb-ft. The standard CLA isn't expected to break cover until next year and the more powerful AMG variant won't be part of the launch line-up, so we could be waiting a while for the CLA 45's official debut.
