There's an all-new Land Rover Range Rover on the way to replace the current fourth-generation model that's been on the market since 2012, and Jaguar Land Rover isn't letting the global coronavirus pandemic stand in its way. According to Autocar, JLR is pushing ahead with the Range Rover Mk V's development as planned, as the brand-new luxury SUV inches closer to its late-2021 launch.

As a matter of fact, the new Range Rover was spotted in cognito undergoing some cold-weather testing back in February, and JLR is preparing to subject it to the requisite hot-weather testing regimen sometime in the coming weeks.

It's an important product for JLR, which just saw the launch of one of its most important utility vehicles - the all-new Land Rover Defender - interrupted by the global Covid-19 outbreak. Like the current Range Rover, the new one is expected to be offered in both standard- and long-wheelbase forms, although it'll be underpinned by JLR's new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform developed with hybrid and pure-electric powertrains in mind, as well as over-the-air software updates that could help reduce the number of trips owners have to make to the dealership.

Powerplant options will reportedly include a BMW V8, and a dual-motor plug-in-hybrid is thought to be in the pipeline, with one electric motor on the rear axle, and one tied directly to the transmission.

Plus, it's believed that Jaguar Land Rover is considering a pure-electric version of its new Mk V Range Rover, with up to 100 kWh of juice and AWD with independent front- and rear-axle electric motors. The bad news: Autocar reports that this model might be aimed primarily - even exclusively - at markets like China, where battery-electric vehicles are in higher demand.

The Land Rover Range Rover just celebrated its 50th birthday last month, and while the automaker might have liked to mark the occasion with the reveal of its all-new fifth-generation model, we likely won't have to wait much longer for the new luxury SUV to drop. We expect its official unveiled to land some time in early 2021.
