Porsche has made very little effort to disguise the next generation 911 prototypes we’ve spotted on public roads and the Nurburgring. Really, what other production car today is butt-engined? The 911’s shape is unmistakable, but we’re hearing now from Autocar that it’s the interior that’ll receive a major update. According to the UK publication, the next 911, due in late 2018 as a 2019 model, will come equipped with its own version of Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, something we experienced first-hand in the latest A4.
To say it’s impressive would be an understatement, and Porsche is more than likely tweaking it somewhat. The all-digital dashboard is the future and it’ll be featured in a Porsche for the first time with the new 911. Knowing that, Porsche has to make sure the system and design is integrated properly into its iconic sports car. In the meantime, we’ll more than likely see more 911 test mules. Yes, they look awfully similar to today’s car, but a closer look reveals a wider stance. Reason being is that Porsche engineers want to keep open the possibility of adding a hybrid system sometime during the car’s life cycle.
After the success of the 918 Spyder, which comes powered by a 4.6-liter V8 paired to two electric motors, Porsche clearly knows how to successfully build a proper hybrid supercar. It's only a matter of time before this tech trickles down to the 911.
