The idea of making a Mazda Miata go faster is one that we're all familiar with. Two of our own staff are constantly embroiled in that obsession- though they might frown at hearing the word "obsession" tossed their way. One man in Palisade, Colorado, was able to turn that go-fast Miata obsession into a very profitable business, and now the car that started it all is up for sale.

Keith Tanner started Flyin' Miata with the intent of doing just that. Since then, the company has grown to offer much more than what it's famous- for putting V8s in Miatas.

This is the original. The car was bought new by Keith, after which the car underwent the brand's V8 Habu conversion. That means a new, 6.2-liter LS3 V8- the very same used in the 5th-gen Corvette- a Tremec T56 Magnum six-speed manual gearbox, and the differential from a Pontiac G8.

The livery is unique to this car, with a Flyin' Miata windshield banner and "LS3 V8" graphics. There's also a roll bar, as well as 17-inch Kogeki wheels of Flyin' Miata's own making. Other upgrades include a hydraulic steering rack, Fox Racing coilovers, Wilwood brakes, and a custom exhaust that now exits from the center of the car.

It's hard to improve upon the ND Miata, though Mazda made great strides with the refreshed ND2 generation- which we recently tested and fell in love with. We sampled both the soft top, like this car and the Targa-ish RF. Both cars have their merits and are nearly as perfect a sports car as you'll find.

Still, for those seeking more power with a "go big or go home" mentality, Flyin' Miata has always been the answer. Right now, the car is up for sale on Bring a Trailer, with four days left and a high bid of $55,000. At least, for now. We have no doubt this car will find a new home soon.
