According to recent reports, Peugeot is planning to take on the newest European FWD hot-hatch king, the Seat Leon Cupra, by churning out a performance version of its popular 308 family hatchback. Collaborating with Peugeot Sport, the company's racing division, the automaker should introduce this car as early as next year. The company is basing its decision on the success of other performance-oriented renditions of its stock cars, like the 208 GTI and the RCZ R.

If the production 308 R is anything like the concept car that Peugeot presented at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, it should be powered by the RCZ R's 1.6-liter 4-cylinder THP engine, which is tuned to deliver 270 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. Of course, all this goodness will not reach our shores, unless the company's plan to re-enter the US market actually occurs sometime in the near future.
