If you've ever been to an open track day, or indeed watched privateer teams competing in just about any kind of sports car racing, you've probably noticed that a hugely disproportionate number of cars are Porsche 911s. It's the go-to car for racers who have some money, but not works team amounts of money. But how did it get this status, where did this motorsports reputation come from? It came from Porsche racing them all of the time, anywhere it could.

As a result, this car started life as a rally racer, but would go on to race multiple times at Le Mans. All while remaining street legal.
