We've known for a while that Porsche is planning a surprise update for the Macan to keep sales of the popular crossover rolling in before the next-generation model arrives. This will be the Macan's second facelift since it launched in 2014. Spy shots have previewed the updated Macan's refreshed exterior and interior, and now a report by Autocar discovered there will be some changes under the hood during a recent road test.

In the base model, the Porsche Macan is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, but Porsche is increasing the output up to 261 hp and 317 lb-ft in the update. And whereas the current Macan S uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 rated at 348 hp and 354 lb-ft, the 2022 model will pack a 2.9-liter V6 good for 375 hp and 383 lb-ft.

Perhaps the most surprising revelation is that the Macan Turbo will be scrapped and replaced by the GTS. In its current guise, the Macan GTS is powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, but the new version will get an upgraded ECU and 33.4 psi of boost pressure, increasing the output to 434 hp and 405 lb-ft, matching the current Macan Turbo. In addition, the 2022 Macan GTS will get new air suspension that can reduce the ride height by 0.4 inches in Sport Mode, while the front and rear springs are 10% and 15% firmer respectively. An optional GTS Sport Package will also be available, which will include a torque-vectoring system.

Styling-wise, spy shots have shown the Macan will feature a redesigned grille and front air intakes, as well as a redesigned rear bumper. Bigger changes can be found inside, including a new digital instrument cluster and a 10.9-inch infotainment screen replacing the current 7.0-inch screen. According to Autocar, the updated Macan will debut in late July. With these upgrades, expect the 2022 Porsche Macan GTS to get a price increase over the current model, which starts at $72,100.
