It's like nothing we've experienced before.
Supercars are fast. Hypercars are even faster. But the Rimac Concept_One is on an entirely different level. We've seen it knock down heavyweights like the LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyder, Bugatti Veyron, and Richard Hammond learned the hard way that an electric car with 1,088 horsepower and 1,180 lb-ft of torque is not to be taken lightly. But we wanted to discover just how brutal the Rimac Concept_One really is for ourselves, and did just that at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend.
Riding shotgun as the Croatian carmaker's test driver, Miro Zrncevic, attacked the hill climb was awe-inspiring. Having previously ascended the hill in a Noble M600 Speedster, a car that produces almost as many decibels as newton meters of torque, the silence of the Rimac as it rocketed to 62 mph in 2.6 seconds was a totally new experience. Building up speed on the short straight then downshifting on the hard right without a V8 or V12 lump wailing and singing behind us was an odd feeling, but by no means a bad one. The Rimac provided unrelenting speed that was almost serene to experience. There's nothing brutal about it.
The convoy of supercars that take it in turns to climb the hill are separated by 20-second intervals, yet we managed to catch the orange Singer 911 that went before us halfway to the finish line. While that took the edge off the final few hundred meters, that minute-long ride in the Rimac up the hill and the equally thrilling ride back down was all the empirical evidence we needed to assert that the Concept_One is on another level to any other supercar out there. Thanks to the hamster, there are now just 7 units of the Concept_One left but work is already well underway on the new car that promises even more power and mind-bending performance.
After the accident, everyone at the Festival of Speed wanted to know more about Rimac – the crowds visiting the Michelin supercar paddock flocked to see what the car looked like not upside down and burned to a crisp. Super low to the ground, with futuristic styling and a latent powerplant that almost defies logic, there is now considerable interest in this fledgling carmaker. Rimac finally has the publicity and attention that it deserves. If the future of the car industry is electric, then Rimac is already in a league of its own with every other automaker playing catch up.
