It wasn't so long ago that most people doubted Tesla's ability to produce an EV, let alone a big luxury EV sedan. Clearly Tesla has proven the naysayers wrong, as Bloomberg is reporting that the Model S has become America's best-selling luxury sedan. Tesla's third-quarter Model S sales, compared to last year at this time, have increased by 59 percent for a total of 9,156 examples sold. Translation: it's now the best-selling luxury sedan in the US, beating out the likes of the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

In fact, Tesla also claims that it's responsible for almost a third of all large luxury car sales at the moment. And it's not only the Model S that's doing well. A total of 5,428 Model X crossovers were sold in the same period, outselling both Porsche and Land Rover SUVs. But perhaps what's most impressive here is that Model S sales are nearly double of those for the S-Class, the number two best-selling large luxury sedan in the US. So, what do the Germans have to say about all of this? Mercedes didn't respond to Bloomberg for comment, but BMW's spokesman did, stating that "The numbers do show that electric cars are progressing and continuing to gain in popularity. That's the ultimate goal for us all."
