There's A New BMW-Bashing Alfa Romeo Giulia Coming

Rumor / Comments

Better late than never, right?

From the moment we first drove the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, it became one of our favorite cars currently on the market, regardless of segment. It's the complete package: character, performance, and luxury. Amazingly, it's been four years since the Giulia lineup, including the QV, first hit the market. It recently received some minor but important updates for the 2020 model year, among them a new 8.8-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system which now has a WiFi hotspot, over-the-air software updates, and a call assist function. There's also a new leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and gear shift lever. The dashboard materials also received a quality upgrade. And there could be more to come.

According to Mopar Insiders, Alfa Romeo is working on an even more powerful Giulia QV and it could even return a famous nameplate: GTA.

Bear in mind this is strictly a rumor for now, but the enthusiast site's FCA sources claim the GTA, which stands for Gran Tourismo Allegerita (Allegerita means lightened) will boast around 620 horsepower from the same 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6, currently with 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic is the likely gearbox.

And because of its lightweight name heritage, the Giulia GTA will drop about 44 pounds, though this is in comparison to the European-spec Giulia QV equipped with the six-speed manual, a feature not available for North America. And speaking of Europe, these same sources claim the GTA will be very low production and it may not even come to North America.

Hopefully it won't be for Europe only but, again, nothing is 100 percent confirmed. When will the Giulia GTA be revealed? Well, it could actually happen this summer at the brand's 110th-anniversary event being held in Milan, Italy on June 24. We already reported a mystery model is set to debut there, with some speculation it will be the production version of the Tonale concept, itself a scaled-down version of the Stelvio, or, perhaps, a new coupe called the 6C. We doubt the latter will happen but the crossover is a real possibility, though we'd much rather see the Giulia GTA with over 600 hp.
