There's Bad News If You Want To Lease A Ford F-150 Lightning

And the same goes for the Mustang Mach-E.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning are two of the most groundbreaking new models added to the Blue Oval's portfolio in recent years. Demand for both models has been excellent, with the electric truck having racked up around 150,000 reservations by September. But Ford has taken a unique approach to the pricing and marketing strategies for its new EVs. For example, the new F-150 Lightning can't be advertised below MSRP, making it trickier to find the best deals on the electric truck. Now, CarsDirect is reporting that prospective F-150 Lightning customers will lose out on a significant loyalty discount that is offered on other Fords.

Specifically, CarsDirect referenced a direct mail offer that targets existing Ford lessees. These qualifying customers could qualify for a loyalty discount of anywhere between $500 and $2,500. The RCL Renewal offer is for "Red Carpet Lease" customers, but while most Ford models do apply, the F-150 Lightning is excluded. Other exclusions include the Mustang Mach-E, Bronco, and F-150 Raptor. For existing customers who are undecided on whether to lease a regular F-150 or an F-150 Lightning, this discount could see them choosing the gas-powered truck instead.

Leasing an F-150 Lightning could be a bad idea in other aspects too. When leasing a 2022 Mach-E Mustang, customers don't benefit from the $7,500 tax credit that the EV usually qualifies for. It's not known yet if the same applies to the F-150 Lightning, but Ford seems to be treating the two vehicles similarly with regards to pricing and financing rules.

To circumvent these limitations, maybe it's best to buy the truck outright. Currently, reservations for the 2022 F-150 Lightning start at just under $40,000 for the base model, increasing to $52,974 for the XLT and going up to over $90,000 for the priciest model. First deliveries of the electric truck are due to get underway in spring 2022.
