There's Going To Be More Angry Rivian Customers

This is not the holiday greetings they wanted.

Car delivery delays have been exacerbated by the pandemic and chip shortage nightmare but legacy carmakers are handling the current situation better than start-ups like Rivian. Despite its highly successful IPO last month, the Amazon and Ford-backed electric truck and SUV company has suffered several customer delivery delays in the past few months. The good news is that deliveries of the Rivian R1T truck have commenced but the R1S SUV is still a few months behind. Unfortunately, some customers for both have just been notified by yet another setback.

Rivian founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe sent an email earlier this week to customers who purchased vehicles with the bigger battery packs informing them their deliveries are delayed until 2023.

"In order to serve the largest number of preorder holders, we will be prioritizing building the Adventure Package with Large pack battery during the next year," Scaringe wrote. The larger battery, called the Max pack, is said to offer a 400-mile range as opposed to the standard battery's 314 miles. A majority of the 71,000 preorders in North America opted for the smaller battery. An estimated 20 percent of buyers went with the better battery.

Still, that's a decent amount of people who will have to wait over a year for delivery. As part of a greater transparency effort, Rivian says it'll introduce a new website feature in the coming few months where customers can log in to their accounts to see an estimated delivery time.

Earlier this month, we reported that Rivian was struggling to keep up with demand. The pre-order backlog is said to be quite significant. To date, there are around 55,400 R1T and R1S orders that have to be fulfilled. Why the delay? It's partly because Rivian is a new company. That's fair. It's also preparing to build a second factory in the state of Georgia soon.

But there's another key reason why private customers have to keep waiting: Amazon. Rivian is also building specially designed EV delivery vans for the e-commerce giant. Jeff Bezos wants his orders delivered on time. And because he's Bezos, he gets priority.
