Chevy's "untunable" sports car just got tuned, big time.
It used to be that all one needed in order to make more power in a factory GM production vehicle was hand tools, a bigger carburetor, and some basic know-how. Times have changed, to say the least, and the engine controller in the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 has a reputation for being virtually unhackable.
Granted, even without access to ECU tuning, Hennessey Performance Engineering still managed to strap a pair of turbos onto the new C8 without blowing it up, introducing moderate boost pressure to see what the factory tuning could handle. The result was 643 wheel horsepower at 5 psi. But Hennessey has now been outdone, as Extreme Turbo Systems has breached the 700 hp mark.
The tuning firm announced on Facebook that they've put together a "proprietary tuning solution and methanol kit" that's netted a total 736 wheel horsepower at 7.5 psi of boost.
"To our knowledge, this is the first C8 Corvette ever to be tuned and break the 700 whp barrier," the company said in a post last week before promising that it has "a lot more in store for this platform."
It's still unclear how Extreme Turbo Systems managed to tune the "unhackable" LT2 V8 in the 2020 Corvette, although introducing a new, standalone engine controller is one potential route.
At 736 wheel horsepower, this turbocharged, methanol-injected C8 is making about 270 whp more than the stock car, which manages around 460 at the wheels. It also bests Hennessey's twin-turbo 'Vette by nearly 100 whp, suggesting that with a bit of work and access to custom fuel and ignition mapping, the new mid-engine Corvette is capable of more - much, much more.
At the moment, Extreme Turbo Systems' turbo and methanol-injection solution for the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette still appears to be in development. But if you're itching to get your hands on a C8 performance upgrade right now, there are a few options. Nitrous Express has already released a nitrous oxide injection kit for the new Corvette, and Fabspeed Motorsports has a splendid-sounding stainless performance exhaust.
