This 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo Costs Nearly As Much As A New One

And it's totally worth it.

It was the last air-cooled flat-six engined Porsche 911, the 993 generation. But the 993 911 Turbo was also the first all-wheel drive 911 Turbo. There’s an end and a beginning to everything. We recently managed to snag some time with this insanely cool 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo, the so-called “last complete modern classic.” With its 959-derived AWD system, power comes from (of course) a flat-six, this time with a 3.6-liter displacement and a pair of turbochargers tossed into the mix. Total output is 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.

Heck, that’s mighty impressive even by today’s standards. Want to know what’s even more impressive? Performance. Zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, 0-100 mph in 9.1 seconds, and a top speed of 180 mph. For the record, that 0-60 time is faster than many exotics of this 911 Turbo’s time, including the Ferrari F355, Dodge Viper and Lamborghini Diablo VT.

Of course, something like this isn’t going to be exactly cheap. Far from it. Back in ’96, this Porsche carried a base sticker price of $99,000, not including destination, gas guzzler tax, or any extra options. Today the window sticker is stamped with a $142,000 price tag. We all know air-cooled 911s are increasing in value faster than Trump posts something offensive to someone on Twitter, so we can accept why this 911 Turbo is priced the way it is. In fact, this thing is really a great buy considering its analog nature, historical place within Porsche, and its still incredible performance specs.
