There's no replacement for displacement, right? Sorry, but no. The trend of smaller capacity turbocharged engines has given us some pretty spectacular powertrains over the last decade, with few as impressive as the G16E-GTS in the Toyota GR Yaris. It's also highly tunable, as it turns out. DTE Systems already has a kit that takes it beyond 300 horsepower.

Unless you've been living under a rock, the Yaris GR has been one of the most impressive cars to come along over the last year. It's right up there with the all-new Porsche 911 GT3, Corvette Z06, and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

As standard, it's equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces 268 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. And as we've recently learned, it can be tuned to deliver nearly 500 hp using stock internals. Say hello to the engine that could take over from the 2JZ as the most modifiableToyota engine ever.

The car you see here belongs to Andrew Hawkins, who lives in Australia. He recently put the modded GR Yaris on the dyno, and it delivered 472 hp at the wheels. At the time, it was running at 36 psi of boost. Only the valve springs were upgraded, and the engine's bottom end has never been opened. It's still running 100% stock internals, with the exception being upgraded valve springs from Toyota following a rocker arm failure earlier in development.

This massive power jump results from a bigger turbo, a new exhaust, an upgraded intercooler, and an upgraded fuel system pumping from a custom surge tank.

According to Hawkins, the engine has been running silky smooth. The coolant and oil pressure are stable, so 36 psi is not enough to lift the head.

Hawkins has not been playing it safe either. The car has been subjected to multiple drag launches, and it's still in one piece.

Hawkins previously tuned his Yaris GR to produce 362 horsepower, and in that configuration, it ran an 11.723 quarter mile at 122 mph. He expects a ten-second run with the new power output. In short, it will kick a Chevrolet Corvette to the curb in a drag race.

Hawkins calls his Yaris GR the fastest and most potent globally, and we have yet to see anything else like it out there. We found a GR Yaris capable of running a 13.38-second quarter-mile, but that's a bit tame compared to this. Perhaps his build will inspire someone else to see if 500 hp is possible?

Also, why can't we have this car in the USA? Please, Toyota. Make it happen.
