This Classic Volkswagen T1 Is More Powerful Than A Modern 911

It's not exactly running stock, of course.

You probably don’t need to be told that this isn’t a normal Volkswagen T1. But what you don’t know is just how special this custom job, built by Fred Bernhard, is. That’s because while the outside looks damn cool, the true magic is happening under the hood. This van is powered by the flat-six boxer engine from a Porsche 911 (993). The brakes and steering bits also come from a 993. The six-speed manual comes from a 996 GT3. With all of this power on tap it’s no wonder the van is called the “Race Taxi.”

Said Taxi is good for 522 horsepower and 558 lb-ft of torque. It sits on 18-inch BBS wheels and weighs in at a trim and slim 3,307 pounds thanks to the use of carbon fiber parts. All told it took Bernhard six years to build this impressive machine.
