Before Toyota chopped the roof off a GR Supra to create the Toyota GR Supra Sport Top concept, a group of students in Japan built their own GR Supra spider. Presented at the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon, the hand-built Toyota GR Supra convertible was based on a Lexus SC430 Convertible with body parts sourced from the A90 Supra and a 2JZ inline-six under the hood.

It also featured fancy scissor doors like those on a Lamborghini Aventador. The custom convertible sports car was a one-off project and Toyota doesn't offer scissor doors as an official factory option, so if you wanted to give the GR Supra Lamborghini-style doors, you were out of luck - until now.

To fill this apparent gap in the market, a US company called Vertical Doors is selling a scissor door conversion kit for the GR Supra if you want the Japanese sports car to stand out from the rest. Built in the US from hardened steel, the scissor door kit is compatible with the 2019, 2020, and 2021 model-year Toyota GR Toyota Supra.

Retailing for $2,199 plus shipping, the scissor door bolt-on hinge kit comes with the GR Supra's factory bolt pattern. In theory, this makes it easy to install with basic tools, and no welding is required. However, Vertical Doors advises that you need to be "mechanically inclined" to perform the Supra's door surgery.

If you're not feeling confident, Vertical Doors offers free technical support available by phone or on social media. Every kit also comes with a shock that will take most of the door weight, making it easy to raise and make a grand entrance. The door kit shown in a video posted by Vertical Doors is a prototype, but the company is currently accepting orders.

Just to make the GR Supra look even more dramatic, the car shown in the video is also fitted with an HKS widebody kit. So far, this is the only A90 Supra in the world with vertical doors. They look stylish, but they aren't very practical. That's why if you want to remove them the conversion kit is completely reversible.
