Way back at the beginning of 2018, it was rumored that the next-generation Mercedes-Benz SL would receive a new AMG 73 drivetrain. This drivetrain would pair a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 612 horsepower with an electric motor contributing 204 hp for a total output of over 800 hp. While an SL73 is likely still on the table, this drivetrain has more recently been discussed in the AMG GT 4-Door, where it would be the most powerful AMG car ever produced.

Mercedes hasn't released any specific teasers for this rumored AMG GT73 but in a recent video celebration AMG's accomplishments in 2019 titled 'Thank You Team For 2019,' we may have been given our first glimpse of the future flagship.

Two minutes and 18 seconds into the video, we see a camouflaged prototype of the AMG GT 4-Door. Since Mercedes isn't readying a facelift for this model, we can only assume this is the GT73. A commenter on the video even pointed out the car and Mercedes answered with a cheeky comment asking - "who is your source?" - with a winky face and thinking emojis. If we had to guess, the car was included as an easter egg for keen-eyed viewers.

We also do not think it is a coincidence that when the prototype accelerates away, there is a Tesla Model S directly in the background. The AMG GT73 won't be a fully electric car but it will have the ability to drive on electric power alone and with over 800 hp on tap, it could challenge the Model S in a drag race with a 0-60 mph time under three seconds.

As the car pulls away, we see the caption "The Future Of Performance," which clearly hints at future hybrid models from AMG. There is also no engine noise as the car accelerates, insinuating that it is using electric power only. Mercedes didn't give any details of when the car might be revealed but our best guess would be at Geneva next year in March.
