The hot hatchback king is back in the form of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R. A recently leaked brochure showed us that the new Type R would make 326 horsepower from its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, making it slightly more powerful than before. What has changed more than the outputs is the design. Whereas the outgoing Type R was as brash as it gets, the new one is a touch more sophisticated and restrained.

But for those wanting to shout about what the car can do, there is a range of sporty accessories that give the latest hatch a slightly wilder appearance. A new walkaround by Honda Cars on YouTube has given us a fresh, close-up look at some of these alterations.

Unlike the previous Civic Type R we saw, this one is finished in Sonic Gray Pearl instead of the classic Championship White. We think it looks even better in this color as it contrasts well with the glossy black detailing and red badging. The red Brembo brake calipers are complemented by red mirror caps instead of the default black ones. We get another look at the aggressive rear wing. This, together with the triple exhaust outlet at the back, makes the rear-end view the most impactful.

In the cabin, red dominates as the vivid hue covers the seats and even the carpets. The standard silver gear knob is replaced here with a sportier one in red with a leather wrapping.

Sporty carbon fiber around the gear lever is another nice touch. We know that Type R door projectors, ambient lighting, and custom carpets are all also available.

As we learned last month, the new Civic Type R will only be built in Japan, as the company's USA facility focuses on volume models rather than niche products like the Type R.

The new Civic Type R will go up against the Toyota GR Corolla, another all-wheel-drive hot hatch out of Japan. The Toyota will make around 300 hp from its 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo engine and comes with its own bulging body and specially tuned chassis. The showdown between these two will be one to watch.
