This Fiat Gets Awesome New Tech Feature From Amazon

Technology / Comments

When will we see it on other FCA vehicles?

The Fiat brand has released a ton of cool products in 2020, including the all-electric 500 hatchback plus a convertible and more practical 3+1 variant. But there's a huge problem with all of these new models: none will be sold in the United States. In fact, Fiat's entire 2021 US lineup is now down to one model, the 2021 Fiat 500X. The 500X enters the new model year with minimal changes, including a few value packages.

If the Italian automaker has any hopes of surviving in North America, it will need to reveal some cutting edge technology in a hurry. It may not be a US-specific announcement, but Fiat is at least coming out with some new technology that could be crucial in making its products more compelling. The Fiat Nuova 500 now includes Amazon Alexa voice services.

This announcement continues the partnership between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Amazon. Alexa now works with the MyFiat skill for connected cars, allowing drivers to play music, listen to the news, check the weather, control connect with home devices, or perform one of over 10,000 other tasks. We've tested Alexa integration in a few vehicles from other brands and found it to be more accurate than the built-in voice command software.

Fiat says the new features will roll out in 2021 to Italy first, followed by Austria, France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The US doesn't appear on the list, so the 500X is unlikely to receive these new Alexa-powered features.

"The Fiat Nuova 500 is the perfect solution, able to offer the cutting-edge in-cabin technologies that motorists expect, without losing its unmistakable city car nature. FCA customers already love to use Alexa at home; now they can take it anywhere, making navigation easier than ever, staying connected, without giving up on moments of leisure, but always staying focused on the road ahead," said Ned Curic, Vice President of Amazon Alexa Automotive.

Luca Napolitano, Head of the EMEA region for the Fiat, Lancia, and Abarth brands, says the "virtual" assistance is the "icing on the cake" for the new 500. Drivers can exclaim, "Hey Fiat," to activate this awesome new feature.
