This Is How To Dominate Winter In A Six-Figure Bentley

Luxury / Comments

The luxury marque makes an offer owners shouldn't refuse.

Just because you have a Bentley Continental GT Convertible (or a hardtop) luxury cruiser, doesn't mean the fun has to stop when the white stuff falls. The company is launching a new winter wheel and tire package for customers, though we're guessing it'll be purchased most by owners in the northern states. The package comes in several new 21-inch styles, all wrapped with Pirelli winter rubber.

There are actually four new wheel and tire packages. The Continental GT, GT Convertible and Flying Spur get one; the Continental GT Speed gets another and there are two options for the Bentayga SUV, which we'd guess would see this option most often. Bentley also notes that GT owners are now able to get the twin-10-spoke design painted in dark gray with a machined finish.

The differences between regular tires and winter tires are many. Winter tires have a different tread pattern, with more grooves that help move water. Bigger tread blocks also dig better into snow and ice, and have more edges to grip the road.

Winter tires also get a different rubber compound than all-season tires. They feature more silica, which is softer, allowing those treads to stay softer too, even in freezing temperatures. The larger rubber blocks and more open grooves of the tire allow it to vibrate and free snow and ice that might get packed in, reducing grip.

As a whole, winter tires are an extremely important part of car ownership in areas with weather, if you can afford them. Not everyone can splurge on a second set of tires, let alone wheels. We'll add that if you can have a dedicated set of winter rims, you can swap them in your driveway, as opposed to going to a shop.

If you've never driven a vehicle with winter tires, we can't espouse the benefits enough. A rear-wheel drive vehicle with winter tires can stop and turn better than any car with all seasons. Add those to an all-wheel drive vehicle like with these Bentleys, and you'll feel unstoppable. But even if you spent less than six figures on your latest ride, winter tires are the safest upgrade you can make this season. We've called for a price on the Bentley package, and will update when we hear back.
