The wait is finally over.
The first new Toyota Supra in 21 years has finally arrived. Making its official debut here at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, the 2020 Toyota Supra, or rather the GR Supra, is a serious sports car that could spell a new beginning for the Japanese automaker.
Inspired by the stunning FT-1 Concept, this two-seater coupe is the first global Toyota Gazoo Racing model and will go on sale this summer in two flavors: 3.0 and 3.0 Premium, as well as a Launch Edition based on the latter trim. Toyota says the fifth-generation Supra has many connections in terms of styling and mechanical configuration, to its ancestors, the 1967 2000 GT and 1993-2002 Supra.
Under the hood is a turbocharged twin-scroll 3.0-liter inline-six making 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. All of that power is directed to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Zero to 60 mph is said to take 4.1 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Total curb weight is 3,397 pounds.
Gazoo Racing in Japan played a major role in development, as did Toyota’s US and European teams. CEO Akio Toyoda, a highly accomplished driver, personally tested the Supra’s capabilities on the Nurburgring and other world-class circuits. Toyota says the torque comes on strong from very low engine speeds and engine response is further enhanced by the variable intake valve lift system.
Drivers can select from two driving modes: Normal and Sport. In Sport, intervention from the traction and stability control systems is reduced, throttle response is sharpened, there's enhanced steering feel, faster shifts and a louder exhaust note. Launch control and an adaptive suspension come standard. It also features a standard active differential that utilizes an electric motor and multiplate clutches to control lateral torque.
This system controls torque distribution between the rear wheels when cornering under both acceleration and braking, among its many capabilities. Chassis tuning is also track-inspired, and combined with high structural rigidity, a low center of gravity and 50:50 weight distribution, the new Supra promises to be a thrilling track car as well as a suitable daily driver.
The interior is designed around the driver, with a high-definition color display instrument panel containing all relevant information like the tachometer and shift-timing indicator. Audio controls and the optional nav system are also housed there.
The center console has an asymmetrical shape that envelops the driver, while the padded pillar serves as a right leg bolster with the passenger getting kneepads for bolstering in corners. The Alcantara power seats are racing-inspired, but are heated and trimmed in leather in the 3.0 Premium.
Premium-trimmed Supras also receive an 8.8-inch touchscreen (a 6.5-inch screen is standard) with navigation, a rotary touch controller, wireless Apple CarPlay, 12-speaker audio system, and wireless charging.
As for that curvaceous exterior design, Toyota says heritage played a key role in helping to determine the overall shape. For example, the front fascia was inspired by the fourth-gen Supra, while the rear integrated spoiler pays homage to the large rear wing also available on the fourth-gen car. The double bubble roof recalls the 2000 GT while also reducing drag. The front LED headlights integrate both daytime running lamps and turn signal functions. Even the backup lights, located in the rear bumper, are LEDs.
With a bold design comes equally bold paint choices. Renaissance Red 2.0, Nitro Yellow, and Downshift Blue are among the choices. Toyota also tells us the Supra "S” logo was inspired by a racetrack s-bend.
Pricing for the 2020 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 will begin at $49,990, the 3.0 Premium starts at $53,990, and the Launch Edition, limited to 1,500 examples, starts at $55,250 (plus a $930 delivery fee for all trims). Each will be individually numbered and will be available in three exterior colors, such as Absolute Zero White with a red interior (pictured here), and will also have high-contrast red mirror caps and 19-inch forged matte black alloy wheels.
The first Supra off the production line will be sold at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction later this month with all proceeds going to the American Heart Association and Bob Woodruff Foundation. Sales for the 2020 Toyota GR Supra lineup will get underway this summer.
