Tier 1 supplier to the automotive industry Magna is getting into the plug-and-play powertrain business. The new system is called EtelligentReach and will debut "on a new entrant vehicle" in 2022. In the photos and videos, we see a Jaguar I-Pace using the system, but we wouldn't qualify that as an entrant vehicle. Magna says the system comes with two motors, inverters, and gearboxes.

The Canada-based company says its new setup can increase range 90 miles or by 30% "compared to certain production BEV vehicles in this segment." Magna says it will reduce range anxiety too, and improve driving dynamics. We hope that's true, though it seems difficult to pull off. But we don't doubt the company, as it recently created a radar system that can see obstacles through clouds in a dark tunnel.

Magna claims that it optimizes the individual components with new vehicle management software. The brain of the system combines "the various powertrain and chassis functions" including the vehicle dynamics controller with front axle disconnect to save fuel. It also works in torque vectoring which improves safety and, in this system, reduces steering effort.

Like most cars on the road, the setup will have drive modes for efficiency and sport, and Magna says more gains are made by using silicon carbide in the inverter, which makes for faster frequency switching leading to lighter motors, less mass and easier cooling.

"This will be Magna's first series production launch of such a system although the company has been working for some time on entire powertrain system configurations covering both the front and rear of the vehicle," a Magna representative told CarBuzz. "We have demonstrated these on various test vehicles to our customers."

The EtelligentReach builds on Magna's growing list of technologies for tomorrow's vehicles. It previously created EtelligentEco, "an intelligent, connected PHEV system that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 38% and offers a unique cloud connectivity feature," as well as EtelligentForce for electrifying fleet trucks "without sacrificing utility." You'll be able to check out all of Magna's new tech at CES in January, the company both will be in the West Hall.
