Only last week did we learn that Universal Pictures was having a hard time finding someone to direct Furious 8. James Wan, who directed Furious 7, passed, as did Justin Lin, who handled Furious 3-6. Rumor has it that, especially with the former director, star and producer Vin Diesel is a real pain in the ass to work with. Then Diesel himself hinted that the original film's director, Rob Cohen, would return for number eight. The studio quickly rejected that, as well as any possibility that Diesel himself would take the director's chair.

And now The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that "Straight Outta Compton" director F. Gary Gray had a meeting with Diesel and studio executives that went very well. So well, in fact, that it appears the deal is done. Vin Diesel is onboard with Gray and pre-production is already underway. Expect Furious 8 to premiere in April 2017.
