It's been a while since Cadillac had a horse in the two-door sports car race. There was the CTS-V Coupe a while back, but that car is long since dead. Before that, we had the luxury GT car that was the Cadillac XLR. While Cadillac has shifted its focus to high-powered sports saloons like the CT5-V Blackwing, Chevrolet has continued to carry the torch for two-door GM goodness.

It would make sense, seeing as the Corvette has always been the go-to GM sports car (sorry, Camaro). That said, we can't help but wonder what would happen if Cadillac fielded a Z06-based sports car. The designers at GM have given us an answer.

The sketch, penned by GM designer Robin Krieg, bears an awful lot of resemblance to the Corvette Z06. The front splitter is very large and very carbon, just like the one on the Z06. Moving up the body, there's also a slightly trapezoidal intake similar to that on the Z06. It'd be tough to call them "canards," but there's some body-color deflectors that look a lot like the ones on the Z06, too. While the hood's design is very different, it does still have a power dome like the one on the Z06.

Of course, there's also some traditionally "Cadillac" design nods. The run-down DRLs are loosely reminiscent of the Escalade, and the car's hyper-angular design doesn't just mimic the Z06, it reminds us a lot of the wedgy CTS-V Coupe. That said, the rest of the car is a design all its own. We're especially taken by the hood vents near the windscreen.

Unfortunately, both brands already seem to have plotted their respective courses. Chevrolet will be taking the Corvette electric at some point, but it's now GM's de facto performance arm. And Cadillac will be going down swinging with the CT4 and CT5-V Blackwing models. After that, the brand will be looking forward to an EV future. Then again, maybe that's what this is. We'd be just as curious about an electric Cadillac sports car as we would a re-badged Z06.
