With a rumored price of $200,000, the Maybach GLS will be the most expensive vehicle manufactured in America.
Five years ago, the current Mercedes Maybach S-Class was unveiled at Auto Guangzhou in China. This month, the same venue will host the world debut of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, the automaker's first ultra-luxury SUV (no, we're not counting the limited-production Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet).
The opulent SUV will debut on November 21 at the 2019 Auto Guangzhou and will boast "state-of-the-art technology, exceptional comfort and the Maybach design philosophy." Being based on the current GLS, the new Maybach SUV will offer "plenty of space for first-class front and rear compartments."
Mercedes hasn't provided any teaser photos of the new Maybach GLS, but the standard GLS and last year's Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept already give us an idea of what it will look like. That said, there will be some unique design cues to set it apart from the regular GLS. To give it a more premium look, we're expecting the Maybach GLS to sport a chrome grille and be available with two-tone color options.
Chances are it won't look as radical as the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury either, which blended design elements from SUVs and sedans. Rumors also suggest the Maybach GLS will have a longer wheelbase than the regular model's 123.4-inch base to provide more space for rear passengers. Unlike the current GLS, the Maybach version may also be offered with a V12 powertrain.
What will also set the Maybach GLS apart from its standard sibling is its opulent interior. Being a Maybach, expect the SUV to offer levels of luxury that rival the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Naturally, the Maybach GLS will be considerably more expensive than the regular model, too.
With a rumored starting price of $200,000, the Maybach GLS will be the most expensive production car ever assembled in America. Also on display at Auto Guangzhou will be the new GLB, GLS, and the Vision EQS, along with the Mercedes-AMG A 35 L 4MATIC developed exclusively for the Chinese market.
