This Is When The 2022 Subaru WRX Will Arrive

Teaser / Comments

It's coming sooner than we expected.

It feels like an eternity since Subaru last released a new WRX, with the current VA generation arriving back in 2014. The all-new 2022 Subaru WRX is nearly upon us, as Subaru posted the first teaser for the car last month in June. Subaru's teaser only showed a dark silhouette of the car, saying that it would arrive "later this year." The company just posted a second WRX teaser, which finally includes an official reveal date.

The 2022 WRX will debut at the 2021 New York International Auto Show on August 19, 2021. In less than one month, we will finally see what Subaru has cooked up for its latest sports sedan. If this teaser is any indication, the WRX will be ready for some light rallying.

While the first teaser only showed a static shot, this latest one displays the WRX in motion on what appears to be a salt flat. The WRX stands for "World Rally eXperimental," so the car should handle off-road surfaces with consummate ease. No details about the drivetrain are confirmed, but rumors indicate the WRX will use a 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four tuned to produce approximately 296 horsepower. This is substantially more than the 260-hp produced by the FA24 engine in other Subaru models like the Outback and Legacy.

Power will go out to a Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system through either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission. Subaru still hasn't hinted when we might see the WRX STI, which should use the same 2.4-liter engine tuned to produce 345 hp with a manual as the only transmission option. Some rumors indicate the STI could produce as much as 400 hp, so we'll have to wait and see. Both models should receive significant improvements in technology, cabin quality, and refinement while retaining the raw feeling that made them special.
