This Is Why The New Mercedes C-Class Beats The BMW 3 Series

Review / 12 Comments

The argument is compelling.

We all know the BMW 3 Series is the benchmark luxury sport sedan. There's very little it doesn't do well. But then we had the chance to check out the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic and, well, let's just say the 3 Series will be needing a redesign. Yes, the new C-Class is that good, especially its interior. Oh, God. That interior. It's a work of art. Compared to the overall dash design in the 3 Series, this new C-Class has it beat. Big time. Our tester was the C300 4Matic, the latter part is Mercedes jargon for its all-wheel drive system.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox. Want a diesel? Move to Europe. In all fairness, the BMW is a few years older than the Mercedes and we'll wait for a complete redesign of the former to make a final dash design judgement here but, for the moment, the C-Class has set the bar way high.

What about the also new Audi A4? Tough call. Its interior design, notably the fit and finish and the double 12.3-inch LCD screens, is a huge leap forward. But the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic's interior reminds us of another fantastic interior: the Mercedes-AMG GT. Special thanks to Mercedes-Benz of Sacramento for letting us film the car.
