If you're from the UK, you probably feel that the Land Rover Defender is the best off-road adventure vehicle out there, but if you're from this side of the pond, your allegiances likely lie with the Jeep Wrangler. While the latter vehicle's design has remained pretty much unchanged since forever, the former's was radically updated a little while back, and this seems to have been the right call as demand reaches unprecedented levels. But what if you prefer the look of the original model and want to mix things up a little? Well, you're in luck. A company called Function that is based in Norwalk, Connecticut, can make you a Defender from a Wrangler, and it looks brilliant.

Function isn't very imaginative with names, however, and has called its new creation nothing more exciting than the Function SUV. But the name isn't important. What is important is the way this off-roader behaves, and Function wanted to blend an ageless design to honor timeless classics with modern technologies for "best-in-class drivability." The company claims that it creates "machines like no one's ever made so you can drive like no one ever has."

To achieve this, the Function SUV is based on a Jeep Wrangler JK frame which is six inches longer than that of a stock Defender. As a result, you get more second-row passenger room.

The body of the vehicle is made from aluminum and the company builds the entire thing by hand, with various customization options available to tailor both the exterior and the interior to the demands of the individual buyer. Power comes from GM's bulletproof 6.2-liter LS3 V8, generating 430 horsepower. This is linked to a six-speed automatic transmission, but you can opt for even more grunt if you get the supercharged LT4 motor with 650 horses and an eight-speed auto. Both options include a two-year/50,000-mile warranty. As for cost, it's high. The starting price is $145,000 which is insane considering that you could buy both a new Wrangler and a new Defender for less. That said, selling something unique at a high cost is a proven successful business model.
