This Low Mileage Mazda RX-7 FD Type-R Is What JDM Dreams Are Made Of

For Sale / 5 Comments

The third-generation Mazda RX-7 coupe sports a few choice mods but has only 16,350 miles on the clock.

Mazda has always had a thing for interesting and fun cars. From SUVs to all-wheel-drive rally cars, the Japanese manufacturer is known for its quirky offerings, and nothing grabs the headlines better than its range of rotary-powered RX cars. The most famous of the lot has to be the Mazda RX-7, which first came into production back in 1978. This revolutionary sports car featured a rotary engine and stole hearts from the get-go. As the years have progressed, the third-generation FD Type R has proven to be the most popular and collectible, and this purple version from Michigan-based Garage Kept Motors is the perfect example.

Mazda tried to relive the glory days of the rotary with the RX-8, but that naturally-aspirated version fell flat on its face and failed to convince fans of the brand. These days the closest you'll get to the legendary FD RX-7 is probably an MX-5 RF. However, this purple 1994 FD is a stunning example of the breed and features only 26,310 kilometers on the odometer.

In the video below, we get to see a full walkaround of the vehicle, and we have to admit: it looks clean. The exterior has been modified, but the interior still looks as good as the day it rolled off the factory floor and features a tachometer with a redline pegged at seven and a half grand and a speedometer that goes up to a typically JDM 180 km/h.

According to the listing on GKM's website, this JDM import has been repainted in Violet Pearl, but it doesn't mention the original color. The bodywork looks straight, and the original body kit still looks fresh. We appreciate the five-spoke JDM wheels and massive exhaust tip that juts out at just the right angle. Pics from under the car show that it is spotless, and there's not a spot of rust to be found, which is impressive for such an early model year.

Under the hood, this 1994 Mazda RX-7 Type R packs a legendary 1.3-liter 13B-REW twin-turbo twin-rotor engine. We know that rotary engines can make massive power, but this bad boy remains stock and produces around 250 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.

JDM RX-7s like these are starting to go for serious money, and Garage Kept Motors' price of $44,900 seems decent to us, especially considering how clean this car is.
