But it's obviously not worth its $70,000 asking price.
We've come across a great number of replica cars over the years, some better than others. We've seen replicas of the Batmobile, replicas of Formula One cars, and dodgy classic Ferrari replicas too. Often, these are based on boring everyday cars and are created in order to fulfill an otherwise unattainable fantasy, but sometimes they're built for profit. We're not entirely sure if that's the case here, but the McLaren F1 replica you see below was for sale on eBay UK. Take a look at the pictures and try to guess what underpins this thing, which the owner had listed with a reserve of £51,000 (approximately $70,000).
As you can see, this replica is made to look like the McLaren F1 LM, of which an original version recently sold for almost $20 million. This replica isn't half bad and even features a central seating position like the original, but it's actually based on the 986 generation Porsche Boxster, meaning that it is a mid-engined, RWD sports car that should handle and perform better than most other replicas. The owner says that the car is fully functional and has no issues. It even boasts a hydraulic lift system to help you get the nose over speedbumps without damaging the front end.
The owner included a complete technical record of the conversion too, and while real enthusiasts of the McLaren brand and the iconic F1 will easily be able to spot the signs that this is a replica, it's certainly one of the better ones we've seen and could likely fool the majority of people who come in contact with it.
Built in the Czech Republic, it retained electric heated seats, ABS, stability control, and a working climate control system. However, despite its relatively low asking price compared to an original F1 LM, there were precisely zero bids on the car at the time of writing and the reserve was never met. Next time!
