Mercedes-AMG already had a reputation for building fast cars before it started producing special editions with a Black Series badge on them. The latest, the AMG GT Black Series, was recently discontinued after all 1,700 examples were built. With 720 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, it's one serious performance car, but that didn't stop German tuner Opus from bestowing the ultimate AMG with more power, for a grand total of 1,111 hp.

It seems Opus is back at it again, though, with enhanced versions of the GT R and GT R Pro. Already an aesthetically menacing supercar, the tuner has fiddled with the halo Mercedes and fitted it with a rear wing based on the example found on the AMG GT4 racecar, increasing downforce on the rear axle.

Underneath the supercar, renamed the R777 GT R, the suspension has been thoroughly reworked. Ohlins TTX suspension now improves the already excellent traction and braking characteristics and features four-way adjustable rebound and compression damping, which allows for perfect stability in all driving situations. Michelin Cup2 R tires provide superior grip.

Power has received a healthy boost, up from the standard car's 577 hp and 516 lb-ft to an immense 777 hp and 625 lb-ft. This is achieved by installing upgraded turbochargers and sports cats, along with improved intercoolers and revised software for the engine and transmission.

Lastly, an exhaust-flap control system allows the regular items to be controlled via remote, making the incredible V8 growl heard whenever it takes the driver's fancy. Opus notes torque is limited for drivetrain longevity, which also provides a naturally-aspirated feel with a linear power curve and unintrusive turbo lag.

Opus has had to fit the R777 GT R with high-performance brake pads, along with racing brake fluid and steel braided brake lines. An upgraded brake cooling system has also been fitted. Overall, the German tuner estimates that, with the full kit fitted, the enhanced GTR will be over 10 seconds faster around the Nurburgring than a factory GT R Pro.

Aside from the aforementioned rear wing, Opus has also replaced the plastic front louvers with carbon-fiber items, giving the front end a meaner look. While the company doesn't want to give too much away, it notes the highly tuned Mercedes will receive a special set of lightweight wheels in the weeks to come.

With the rare Black Series no longer in production, fans hoping to get their hands on one may have to look elsewhere. In the R777 GT R, it seems Opus has the solution. Oh, and just in case 777 hp isn't enough for you, the tuner can offer performance kits with over 900 hp.
