It's perhaps a testament to just how right the Ford Fiesta ST is that, even in its dying days, this dinky five-door hatch remains one of the finest cars in its class. In fact, we challenge you to find another car for around $22,000 (ish) that's as practical and as fun to drive. We can't think of a single offering that comes close. As a result, we were mightily excited upon reading an Autoblog report on a rather powerful Mountune kit that's in the works. These are the same folks who bumped up the power of the Focus RS this summer.

According to Ken Anderson, the president of Mountune USA, the intention is to release a new kit before 2016 draws to a close, with the idea being to add some serious power to the tiny hot hatch. Through a combination of a new turbocharger and an ECU remap (the latter being an upgrade option that Mountune's perhaps best known for), this new kit will liberate another 80 hp from the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. This will turn the 197-hp junior performance hatch into a device with more on-paper grunt than an Audi S1, Mini John Cooper Works, Volkswagen Golf GTI and even a factory-sourced Ford Focus ST. We don't know about you, but that sounds rather ace to us.

In fact, the only problem we have with this package is that we've no idea if it just incorporates power upgrades. Granted, Mountune also has a range of non-engine upgrades to its name that include (but aren't limited to) brake parts, suspension components and chassis braces. We would be surprised if this flagship aftermarket kit doesn't do more than throw nearly 50% more power at the standard Fiesta ST. Since this new Mountune package will be available to purchase and install before the end of the year, hopefully it won't be too long until we find out what exactly the firm has in store for its most extreme Ford Fiesta ST package to date.
