Toyota Corolla Cross Gets The Makeover It Deserves

Design / Comments

Now no longer the most boring car on sale.

The Toyota Corolla Cross, an alternative to the classic corolla sedan, made its international debut in July, and is sold as a subcompact crossover. The Cross shares its TNGA-C platform with its sedan and hatchback siblings and will soon be offered in a hybrid configuration. We must admit that this isn't the most exciting car Toyota has ever built, and can best be described as inoffensive and affordable. It also features old-school quirks such as a twist key, and isn't particularly quick, but that hasn't stopped JDM styling specialists Modellista from trying to turn this boring duckling into a flashy piece of family-friendly fun.

Modellista offers two different kits; the Auto Parts Set (white car pictured), and the Cool Shine Kit, and each come with its own unique flavor. The Aero Parts Set is definitely the more aggressive of the two and features a unique front spoiler, body-colored wheel arches, and meaty rocker panels. The rear bumper also features some aggressive spats. The Cool Shine Kit is for the more discerning client who likes to keep a low profile. This kit adds chrome garnish on the side vents, wing mirrors, tailgate, door handles, front grille. Modellista also offers a large number of individual parts including custom 18-inch wheels.

On the inside, the company offers an upgraded JBL audio system, carbon-fiber interior trim and LED door lights amongst other features. Unfortunately, dressing the Corolla Cross up in a fancy body kit will leave it just as slow: its naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 169 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque, and is as tame as they come. There's no word if this kit will make it stateside, but the kit will be available from Toyota dealerships across Japan.

In its home country, the Aero Parts Set can only be applied to models painted Platinum White Pearl, Attitude Black, or Sparkling Black Crystal, while the Cool Shine can be applied to a broader range including Cement Gray, Dark Blue, and Sensual Red among others.
