Toyota GR Yaris Widebody Kit Gives Hot Hatch A New Lease Of Life

Tuning / Comments

This is exactly what the little WRC homologation car needs.

German tuning house Prior Design has dropped its new widebody aerodynamic kit for the Toyota GR Yaris, and it makes the little homologation car look like it's about to hit a rallycross track.

For those that haven't been following the GR Yaris in Europe, it's not the Yaris you see here on the road in the US. The GR Yaris was built from the ground up old-school-style as a homologation car. For example, the GR Yaris dispenses with the rear doors and any consideration for rear passenger headroom. The roof is made of carbon fiber, the hood, doors, and rear hatch are made of aluminum, and only the front half of the chassis is related to the standard Toyota Yaris. Sadly, that's not enough to justify selling it in the US.

However, the World Rally Championship regulations for homologation limit the aerodynamic enhancements on cars sold to the public, which is where companies like Prior Design come in.

Prior Design's aero kit is made of fiberglass certified for quality by TUV Rheinland, which has been making technical equipment and products safer since 1872. The kit comprises a front lip spoiler and cupwings, a diffuser, a roof spoiler, and add-on lips for the side skirts, then the wide arches for the front and rear fenders.

no claims about aerodynamic improvement have been made, but judging by the detail Prior Design gives on fitting the kit, it plans for people to use it properly: on the track. When talking about the fitment from the factory, Prior Design notes that fiberglass construction "undoubtedly minimizes the costs of potential reconstruction."

Hopefully, some buyers will take the tuner up on its challenge and test the kit's mettle. According to Prior Design, the parts have a "smooth, stylish, high-end surface finish that provides sufficient flexibility combined with a decent stability." As a result, it claims it doesn't need much more than a quick clean before being painted. However, it's not something you can simply bolt onto the GR Yarris in your garage - the wheel arches and front fenders will need to be cut for fitting.

Hopefully, the tuner will soon release something for the GR Corolla. The GR Yaris shares its engine with the larger hot hatch, but the Corolla gets more power and, crucially, is sold on our shores.
