The crazy state of the automotive markets has made it commonplace to see cars of all types selling well above their intended retail prices. New models are snapped up quickly, and many are left waiting or paying extra to get behind the wheel. That's looking to be the case with the Toyota GR86, as buyers in the UK jumped on reservations as soon as they opened.

Toyota opened orders for the car at 10 am local time, and the entire allotment was gone just 90 minutes later. The automaker has no plans for an additional allocation for the country, thanks partly to its noncompliance with tightening crash regulations.

Though hope is slim now, buyers trying to get on the list earlier this week got a glimmer of hope from Toyota. Once initial reservations were exhausted, buyers could add their names to a cancellation waiting list. Toyota said it would base the order of the list on the customers' access times, with earlier visitors given priority.

Here, Toyota sells the 86 in two trims, but buyers in the UK can only choose between a manual or automatic transmission. Even so, the cars are well equipped out of the box, with 18-inch wheels, an eight-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitors, and LED adaptive headlights. The automatic transmission was a £2,090 option.

The 86 strikes a compelling balance of performance and value, and it's one of few pure sports cars left on sale. In the UK, the car's price tag of £29,995 makes it cheaper than a GR Yaris and very reasonable overall, so Toyota's priced it to move. Plus, with more power and torque at its disposal, the new GR 86 solves many of the issues that plagued its predecessor. The automaker also announced that it would sell the 86 in limited quantities for a limited time, giving people a sense of urgency.

Though the GR 86 sold in a heartbeat, its counterpart won't be sold in the UK. The Subaru BRZ, which is functionally identical to the Toyota, is similarly improved for the 2022 model year with more power and updated tech. The previous-generation car was sold in the country, but the new variant will not join the Toyota on sale.
