With the Toyota Land Cruiser's 60th anniversary coming up, an anniversary edition was an inevitable idea. Few models reach that kind of milestone, and the Land Cruiser SUV is a legend for its ruggedness and off-road prowess. For many that have to head into the harshest of climates around the world, the reliability and strength of an off-roader can become the difference between life and death. The Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition was announced earlier this year, but now we know the price. It's $89,040 with the delivery charge, while the base price Land Cruiser is $86,710.

That $2,330 difference looks steep when you consider that the Heritage Edition is essentially an aesthetic upgrade package. The most obvious features for the special edition on the outside is that it rides on exclusive 18-inch BBS Wheels and comes with two paint choices, either Midnight Black Metallic or Blizzard Pearl. The running boards and side moldings are removed, which is a nod to taking it off-road. Then there's darkened chrome surrounds for the foglights and headlights, black accents for the grille, and Vintage Land Cruiser exterior badges added.

On the inside, the third row is removed to give some extra cargo space, and the remaining seating features black leather upholstery with contrasting bronze stitching. The drivetrain doesn't get any extra love and sticks with the solid and powerful 5.7-liter V8 engines making 381 horsepower that's connected to an eight-speed automatic and full-time 4-wheel-drive system.

Considering the Land Cruiser's heritage is in its military roots and off-roading capability mixed with comfort, it's an odd choice for the Heritage edition to be mainly about looks. It's not out of character though as the Land Cruiser is still only available in the one trim and only has one package to upgrade with in the form of the rear-seat entertainment system. Curiously, the entertainment upgrade is $2,220 and only $110 less than the Heritage Edition upgrade. Toyota plans to make 1,200 Heritage Edition Land Cruisers.
