Toyota is so big that most of us have no idea just how many different models it sells in different regions and different continents. Sure, something like the Toyota Prius is pretty universal, but a customer in the Netherlands will never get to experience a Tacoma TRD, and we will never know the pleasures of driving a true Hilux. While the company gets ready to drop exciting new models such as the Toyota GR86 in the US, Europe gets ready for the arrival of something a bit more sedate. Say hello to the new Toyota Aygo X, an all-new compact urban crossover that is set to take Europe's A segment by storm.

The new car is built on the GA-B platform of the Toyota Global New Architecture and was designed at Toyota Motor Europe in Belgium where its urban crossover looks took shape. The car features a bold bi-tone exterior design and a wedged roofline. The color palette was inspired by various spices from across the planet, and each color has its own unique flavor. Cardamon "conjures an impression of style and elegance, delivering a refined and understated aesthetic with the green's low saturation effect", while Chilli "is a fiery and premium color that catches the eye of passers-by with a warm and deep color reflection thanks to the inclusion of a fine sprinkling of blue metallic flakes in the red paint," says Toyota. Ginger cars feature hints of beige and feel warm to the touch and the eye. Juniper is also an interesting option and features blue overtones with reddish undertones. We adore the canvas fold-out roof that adds a touch of Mediterranean style reminiscent of the Fiat 500.

In order to make the new Aygo X as capable as possible, Toyota decided to make it light and efficient and lifted the ride height by 11 millimeters from the previous-generation Aygo. The seating position has also been raised by 55 mm. This little machine weighs in at only 2,072 pounds, so the 1.0-liter three cylinder naturally aspirated engine shouldn't have any difficulties pulling it around, even though it produces only 72 horsepower. The Aygo X will smash the 0-60 mph sprint in 15.5 seconds when equipped with the CVT automatic transmission, or 15.6 seconds with the manual box, and will top out at 100 mph. Inside, this little city crawler sports a 9-inch high-definition touchscreen display, wireless phone charging, cloud-based navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and ambient lighting. You even get LED headlights.

The Aygo X is set to hit European city streets in 2022.
