Love it or hate it, the Toyota Prius is undeniably one of the most influential cars of the 21st century. While others tried and failed, the Prius managed to democratize hybrid cars as we know them today. After debuting in Japan back in 1997, the world's first production hybrid car arrived in the US in 2000, and was an instant sales success thanks to its affordable price tag and celebrity endorsement.

Since it went on sale, Toyota has sold six million Prius cars worldwide and more than 3.6 million total hybrid models in the US including Lexus cars. The Prius is still popular today, as Toyota shipped 1.9 million models in the US last year. To celebrate its 20th anniversary Toyota is launching a new special-edition Prius for the 2021 model year. Dubbed the Toyota Prius 2020 Edition, the commemorative hybrid car will be limited to just 2,020 examples.

Based on the XLE FWD trim, the Prius 2020 Edition can be finished in Supersonic Red or a new Wind Chill Pearl exterior color, contrasted with striking black trim and unique features including a color-keyed rear spoiler.

Other unique exterior enhancements include black inserts for the 17-inch alloy wheels, blackout headlight components and trim, B-pillars and mirror housings, as well as "2020" insignia key glove/fob and floor mats, a black shift knob and interior A-pillar trim, and smoked HVAC vents. being based on the XLE trim, the 2020 Edition also comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, a heated trimmed eight-way power driver's seat, a heated tilt/telescopic steering wheel, three-door smart key system with push-button start, remote illuminated entry, rear wiper, and a wireless phone charging pad.

In addition to the 2020 Edition, Toyota is also updating to the standard Prius for the 2021 model year. As standard, the Toyota Safety Sense has been upgraded to version 2.0 for 2021 adding new advanced safety tech including a pre-collision system with low-light pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, bicyclist detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. Every 2021 Prius excluding the Limited trim also adds Android Auto support. Apple CarPlay compatibility was already standard on 2020 Prius models.

Toyota will show the new Prius 2020 Edition during a livestream event on May 18 at 11am EDT, where two all-new hybrids will also debut. Pricing and availability for the Prius 2020 Edition hasn't been announced, but the 2020 Toyota Prius XLE starts at $28,375.
