Toyota Reveals Its Favorite GR 86 Tuning Concepts

Toyota shows off the tuning possibilities for the new GR 86.

Thanks to its low entry price, the last-generation Toyota 86 was a popular car for tuning projects, and it looks like the all-new GR 86 will continue this tradition. To showcase the myriad tuning possibilities for the new sports car, Toyota gathered seven custom GR 86 concepts created by the renowned Japanese tuners HKS, Trust, Cusco, Blitz, Sard, GR Parts, and Tom's.

One of the clear standouts is the GR86 HKS Concept. Under the hood, HKS has fitted a GT2 supercharger kit, an oil cooler kit, and a Hi-Power Spec L II super lightweight exhaust with a titanium tip. These modifications boost the output to around 340 hp, making it roughly 120 hp more powerful than the stock car.

It also stands out thanks to its racy body kit that includes a carbon-fiber front lip spoiler and front canards, side skirts, and a prominent racing-style rear wing.

Taking a more subtle approach, the TOM's GR86 concept is fitted with custom front and rear splitters, new side skirts that extend the car's width, a rear spoiler, and an aggressive-sounding quad-exhaust system. It also sits lower to the ground than the stock car. The GR 86 GR Parts Customize Concept, on the other hand, features an assortment of sporty aero add-ons designed to enhance the driving experience on the street, including a subtle front spoiler, rear bumper spoiler, trunk spoiler, 19-inch forged aluminum wheels, and a monoblock brake kit.

If you were hoping the new GR 86 would be turbocharged, Trust's take on the GR 86 adds a GReddy turbo to the 2.4-liter boxer engine. No technical specifications were revealed, but adding forced induction should provide a welcome boost over the stock car, which is rated at 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. If you want improved handling, the rally-inspired Cusco GR 86 Motor Sports Concept is fitted with a coilover suspension kit, adjustable stabilizer links, and a stiffer strut bar.

In the US, sales for the 2022 Toyota GR 86 will start by the end of the year. Pricing will likely start at around $31,000 but it's clearly going to be easy to spend a lot more than that on custom parts.
