"The new Supra doesn't have the spirit of the original," said the doubters.
The original Supra that became a legend wasn't the original Supra. It was the fourth-generation model and, specifically, the one optioned with the twin-turbocharged Toyota 2JZ-GTE inline-6 engine. Other 2JZ generation engines were available, but that's the one that became the tuner's champion, creating the legend of the easy to build 10 second Supra, and the perfect engine to build even faster quarter-mile cars with.
Tuners are starting to realize that the BMW B58 engine is supremely capable and takes to modification extremely well. Now, a Puerto Rico based shop has built a 9-second fifth-generation Supra.
We've already seen a breakdown of the BMW B58 engine showing how much potential it has, and some 10-second Supra's are already out in the wild. Speedy Mufflers & Performance is claiming it's the first 9-second car and released the video and pictures of the timesheet from a drag racing event to show it off. The Speedy Mufflers & Performance customer's car clocked in at 9.9244 seconds with a speed of 133.4507.
What bakes our noodle though is that the tuner claims it's 'only' running on "stock turbo basic mods."
Taking a peek behind the curtain, those 'basic' mods when the car was running a 10-second quarter-mile included Hoosier Drag Radial Tires, a nitrous oxide system, a full Exhaust System with downpipes, a cutout Charge Pipe and intake, and running on Sunoco 100 Octane Fuel. Both the fuel injection and the nitrous oxide system are tuned by specialists as well.
If this is true, and we don't have any real reason to doubt it, it's going to be interesting to see how far the Supra on a stock drivetrain and stock BMW B58 internals can be pushed.
