The latest teaser confirms what's under the hood... sort of.
There is yet another new teaser for the long-awaited, next-generation 2024 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. Long-awaited might be the understatement of the year, as the current Tacoma has been in production since 2015. This latest teaser shows off the tailgate of the TRD Pro version, confirming that the off-road model is coming in the new generation (as if there was any doubt).
Along with the confirmation of the TRD Pro, this single image also contains some minor details about what will live under the hood of the latest Taco. A prominent i-Force MAX badge on the tailgate officially reveals what rumors have suggested; the next-generation Tacoma will be a hybrid.
The i-Force MAX powertrain is currently used in the larger Tundra pickup truck, where it pairs a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with an electric motor mounted in the transmission. This setup produces 437 horsepower and a 583 lb-ft of torque, meaning it's likely too potent for a smaller truck like the Tacoma. We'd guess that the Tacoma will use Toyota's 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor just like the Hybrid MAX setup in the Crown. There, it delivers 340 hp and 400 lb-ft, which would be more than any previous Tacoma.
The Tacoma Hybrid should use the same six-speed automatic transmission found in the Crown and the Lexus RX 500h F-Sport Performance, while the non-hybrid will likely get an eight-speed. "The best-selling midsize pick-up in America is all-new for MY2024 with electrifying i-Force MAX performance," Toyota said in its latest teaser. This does not confirm the existence of a non-hybrid model, but we doubt Toyota would leave behind buyers who only want a gas engine.
Toyota has been very clever thus far in its teaser campaign, taking advantage of leaked images from the Brazilian Patent Office by joking about the leak in the first teaser. The second teaser only showed a shadowy silhouette of the truck but got Tacoma fans excited by confirming that an official reveal can't be too far away.
We still don't know exactly when the 2024 Tacoma will make its debut, but we imagine Toyota is anxious to get it into dealerships later this year. We'll keep you updated with more news, as this likely won't be the final teaser, leading up to an official announcement. "Stay tuned for updates on the Tacoma's incredible new design and features," Toyota says.
