The latest Corolla Commercial is a hybrid - but it's for the UK only.
The UK-developed and built Toyota Commercial, aka the Corolla "van," has received an upgrade for 2023 with the Japanese automaker's fifth-generation hybrid system. If you're a small commercial organization or own any other type of small business, a Corolla-based van would be perfect for you. Prepare to get jealous if you don't live in the UK for this one.
The Toyota Commercial is based on the Corolla Touring Sports trim and has 1,326 liters (46 square feet) of load space in the back. That includes a rubber load space lining, full bulkhead grille, interior light, and a 12v power outlet, and it can carry 936 pounds of weight.
The upgraded powertrain is based around a 1.8-liter engine built in Wales, while the electric side of things features a new power control unit, a new transaxle design, and calibration designed to deliver "a more rewarding driving experience with a closer relationship between the driver's use of the accelerator and the drive force delivery." The battery is a new lithium-ion hybrid unit that's smaller and lighter but has a higher output.
Total power is 138 horsepower, and fuel economy is rated at 64 mpg on the European WLTP rating, which should convert to around 43.2 mpg if the EPA rated the vehicle. CO2 emissions are measured at 100g per kilometer.
The Corolla Commercial also includes Predictive Efficient Drive, which uses data gathered on regular journies about when and where the driver always decelerates, to give guidance to maximize energy regeneration from the system. It will also predict downhill sections and traffic congestion from routes put into the onboard navigation system to work out efficient battery charge management - including maintaining a certain level of battery charge before hitting traffic congestion.
On top of all that, the latest Corolla Commercial includes the current Toyota Safety Sense upgrades, including increased detection capability of the Pre-Collision System (PCS) and a quicker-to-respond Full Range Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).
There's not even the vaguest hint that the Corolla Commercial could come to the US, even though it looks like a perfect local delivery vehicle or van for small businesses that provide technical and repair services.
