There are already two less 2020 Shelby GT500s on the road.
Customer deliveries have begun of the highly-anticipated 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, the most powerful road car Ford has ever produced. Unfortunately, two lucky customers who were looking forward to taking their new Shelby GT500 for a spin are going to be seriously disappointed.
WDIV reports that a Ford F-350 Super Duty hauling several cars on a trailer jackknifed, causing the trailer and the cars it was carrying to flip over onto their sides on the Northbound I-75 highway in Detroit. It isn't known if anyone was injured or how the accident happened, but there were several car casualties.
The two cars being carried on the trailer appear to be brand new 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500s en route to their new owners. They can be seen resting on their sides after falling off the trailer and smashing onto the highway. One is finished in Iconic Silver while the other is finished in Grabber Lime. Northbound traffic was stopped in all lanes for several hours while the cars were rescued and driven away on flatbed trucks.
The damage doesn't appear to be too extensive, but the Iconic Silver model came off worse as it also smashed into the pickup that was towing the trailer, leaving it with a crumpled front-end.
Both cars can hopefully be repaired, but this is still going to be a very expensive mistake. Pricing for the 2020 Shelby Mustang GT500 starts at $74,000, and that's before you start exploring the options list.
One of the cars damaged in the accident appears to be a high-spec model fitted with the desirable Carbon Fiber Track Package, which costs an extra $18,000. Ford also recently announced it will be offering free performance driving lessons to help buyers tame the 760-horsepower Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 at the limit.
