Hyundai has just announced a significant milestone: the sale of its 15 millionth vehicle in the United States. That vehicle was a brand new Tucson, sold at West Herr Hyundai in Williamsville, New York, to Wendy and James Tuskes.

It's been quite a journey for the South Korean automaker since it entered the US market in 1986. Back then, Hyundai made a name for itself with affordable econoboxes that lacked attractive designs. Things are very different today.

The first Hyundai sold here was the Excel, if you're old enough to remember it. Over the years, Hyundai has become one of the fastest-growing automakers in the US and has significantly expanded its lineup.

In just the past 11 years alone, Hyundai's lineup has increased, including three all-electric models, the Kona EV, Ioniq 5, and Ioniq 6. But Hyundai has done more than sell millions of vehicles; it also builds them here.

In 2005, Hyundai opened its first manufacturing facility, located in Alabama, and it now employs around 3,400 people.

Earlier this month, the automaker confirmed plans to begin construction of a new electric vehicle battery production plant in Georgia. It'll open its doors in 2025 and create 8,100 new jobs simultaneously. In addition to job creation, Hyundai has donated $200 million through its Hyundai Hope On Wheels program, which funds research to fight childhood cancer.

With 820 dealers in the US and over 738,000 vehicles sold in 2021 alone, Hyundai's US market future has never looked better. "I can't think of a better way to conclude 2022 than by celebrating the sale of our 15 millionth Hyundai vehicle in the United States," said Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America.

"Over the past 36 years, Hyundai has grown its product portfolio, its manufacturing footprint in America, and its market share, becoming the fifth-highest-selling brand this year. We are excited to see more growth in 2023 and beyond - particularly as we continue to expand our electric vehicle product line and manufacturing."

Mr. and Mrs. Tuskes are also quite thrilled because West Herr Automotive Group gave them a check to cover their first-year car payments.

"Achieving 15 million vehicle sales is no small feat, and we are thrilled that the Hyundai customer was right here in Williamsville, New York," said Scott Bieler, president of West Herr Automotive Group.
