A plug-in hybrid with M3 performance and 80mpg? Yes, we'd be interested in that.
BMW has been extremely busy lately as they're in the final development stages of their upcoming new supercar, the i8. Unlike most other known high-performance cars, the i8 will be a plug-in hybrid consisting of a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor along with all-wheel-drive. In this new video, BMW North America CEO Ludwig Willisch gives a brief tour of the i8 concept at the New York Auto Show.
What caught our attention specifically was his statement that the final production version will have the "performance of an M3 and have 80 mpg." All told, it'll have 360hp. In addition, the production model will retain those unique doors and will have sufficient passenger space up front and back.
Overall, the i8 certainly looks intriguing, but we'll have to wait until spring 2014 to see it if it truly represents what could be the next generation of supercars.
