Work continues on the updated BMW X5. For those without an unnecessarily deep knowledge of Bimmer nomenclature, LCI, or Life Cycle Impulse, means "refresh." Currently, the whole X5 lineup is in for several updates. We've previously spied the X5 hybrid and the new X5 M60i prototype during testing.

This one, however, appears to be a plane-Jane base X5, albeit with marginally less camo on it this time around. Specifically, BMW has shed some of the camo around the rear lights, which gives us a better look at what the LCI will bring. Remember, these LCIs are larger than a typical automaker's refresh. The X7, for example, got a whole new engine during its LCI this year.

Speaking of the X7, it's apparent the lights at the rear of the vehicle will closely mirror the new X7's lighting arrangement. These new lights appear to loosely mimic the X7's c-shape with more modern looks and a slightly more angular shape. We note the tailgate appears to bear resemblance to the larger SUV as well, but can't confirm at this time.

Up front, the X5 is set to get some slimmer headlights to match the new lights at the rear. In the BMW-speak, LCI stands for Light Cycle Impulse as well. BMW has covered up the kidney grill too because that will be tweaked before the LCI is launched.

Inside, BMW will update the new X5 with its more current iDrive 8 infotainment system. BMW has been trickling iDrive 8 into new models have they have been refreshed either for the model year or as part of the brand's larger LCI program. For example, the M3 and M4 got the update without the LCI, though that could be coming soon.

Regardless, we don't have any new information on powertrains. BMW will offer an M-lite M60i trim, an X5 M, and a hybrid. We expect BMW will give us the updated X5 sometime next year, most likely as a 2024 model.
