Over the next two to three years, Porsche will produce 918 copies of its upcoming 918 Spyder, and according to Automotive News, the US will be its largest market with at least 190 models coming our way. Porsche has been pursuing potential buyers of ifs plug-in hybrid supercar, wooing them with invitations to private viewings. In the US, exclusive events have been held in New York, Texas and California to name but a few. Priced at $845,000 with a $200,000 up-front deposit, potential buyers are few and far between.

Yet Porsche claims there will be an average of one car per US dealership, so at least 190 units. The limited run hasn't sold out, but Porsche expects the release of new specs to generate more interest. This month Stuttgart revealed the 918 Spyder's 4.6-liter V8 is rated at 600 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, with total output set at 887 hp when combined with two electric motors. 0-62 mph comes in 2.8 secs and top speed at 211 mph. Porsche will unveil the production 918 Spyder at the Frankfurt Motor Show before production starts on September 18. Europeans will be the first to get the car with US deliveries to start in the early part of 2014.
