He paid for it with his own money.
Valtteri Bottas and his magnificent mullet recently took delivery of a brand-new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm, which he paid for with his own money. This is exceedingly rare in the world of Formula 1, as high-profile drivers rarely pay for cars. Most of the time, they just get given a car for free. Max Verstappen was gifted a limited-edition Acura NSX Type S last year, and Fernando Alonso recently received his new company-sponsored Aston Martin DBX707, which he then spanked around a track.
But Bottas paid full price to become 1 of 500 lucky owners to get a Giulia GTA. We do suspect Bottas used his influence to get his name on the list, as the GTA has been sold out since 2021, back when Bottas was still a clean-cut Mercedes driver.
We'll cut him some slack because we would have done the same to get our hands on this glorious GTAm finished in what appears to be Etna Red. The GTA was only available in Etna Red, Montreal Green, and Trofeo White to represent the colors of the Italian flag.
Bottas collected his car from the Stellantis &You showroom in Turin. We're not sure why Alfa didn't go for its flagship store in Turin, as Bottas has a history with this famous city.
Several of Alfa Romeo's bosses were on hand to celebrate the occasion. Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of Alfa Romeo; Cristiano Fiorio, F1 manager; and Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, head of Alfa Romeo design, met up with Bottas to hand over the car and to discuss upcoming projects with which the F1 driver is involved.
To us, this is a subtle clue that Bottas is somehow involved with the upcoming Alfa Romeo supercar, as the brand's F1 partnership with Sauber ends this year. This makes us want the upcoming Alfa even more, even though we still don't know whether it will be powered by internal combustion or electricity.
"I'm clearly a lifelong car enthusiast. But most of all, I love the Alfa Romeo brand. It is an honor for me to be an ambassador of the brand and now to become a customer, an owner of one of the 500 Giulia GTAs," said Bottas.
The GTA is the most powerful Alfa Romeo ever built and benefits from a 220-pound weight loss regimen and a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged Ferrari-derived V6 boosted to 540 horsepower. The hardcore GTAm that Bottas opted for has more extreme aero, no rear seats, Lexan windows, and a roll bar, among other track-focused-but-street-legal upgrades.
Expect to see this red GTA sliding around the streets of Monaco quite soon, which will be a much better sight to behold than the guy binning his silly EV microcar around the famous Grand Hotel hairpin.
